Exploring Burgundy: The Château de Bazoches 19th Jul 2017

At first glance, the Château de Bazoches would not necessarily get a military buff’s pulse racing. This grand Burgundian château dates back to the 12th century, when it was first built on the site of an old Roman outpost looking over the Morvan hills. Its elegant interiors are largely preserved from the17th century, reflecting the tastes of King Louis XIV’s refined courtiers. However, its most famous owner was far from an aestheticist.

Barging and Biking with European Waterways 19th Jul 2017

The beauty of a hotel barge cruise with European Waterways is that it can be as active – or as relaxing – as the guest wishes to make it. When some picture the ideal afternoon on board, they see themselves sitting out on the deck in the sunshine, watching the scenery drift by with a glass of chilled wine in hand. Others, however, get twitchy sitting still for too long. For the latter, we have an excellent solution: our barging and biking schemes.

We are not alone in the belief that cruising the Caledonian Canal is the perfect way to appreciate the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. This 60-mile waterway, which bisects the Highlands from Fort William in the south west to Inverness in the north east, passes brooding castles and connects dramatic, deep-water lochs.

We are sure that the cooks amongst you have often used Parmesan cheese in your recipes, perhaps in the béchamel sauce on top of a homemade lasagne, or crumbled onto a green salad to give it an extra dimension. Chef Andrea, the talented chef on our small river cruiser La Bella Vita, certainly makes great use of this flavoursome cheese and has passed on some interesting facts that may be new to you.
