We are not alone in the belief that cruising the Caledonian Canal is the perfect way to appreciate the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. This 60-mile waterway, which bisects the Highlands from Fort William in the south west to Inverness in the north east, passes brooding castles and connects dramatic, deep-water lochs.

At first glance, the Château de Bazoches would not necessarily get a military buff’s pulse racing. This grand Burgundian château dates back to the 12th century, when it was first built on the site of an old Roman outpost looking over the Morvan hills. Its elegant interiors are largely preserved from the17th century, reflecting the tastes of King Louis XIV’s refined courtiers. However, its most famous owner was far from an aestheticist.
The beauty of a hotel barge cruise with European Waterways is that it can be as active – or as relaxing – as the guest wishes to make it. When some picture the ideal afternoon on board, they see themselves sitting out on the deck in the sunshine, watching the scenery drift by with a glass of chilled wine in hand. Others, however, get twitchy sitting still for too long. For the latter, we have an excellent solution: our barging and biking schemes.
The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon have just ended and during the 2 weeks it took place vast quantities of strawberries and cream were consumed were consumed by the spectators, often washed down with Pimms No.1 Cup.
