BAYE-CLAMECY/The lakes of Pannesiere and Settons

Previous | Home | Next

The lakes of Pannesiere and Settons which feed the Nivernais canal at the top of the canal system. They are about 15 km from the actual canal and there is a stream called the Rigole de Yonne which goes through 3 tunnels along the edge of the Morvan hills and over an aqueduct which is about 300 feet high, supplying fresh water at about 10 miles an hour. Derek Banks took a Thames dinghy down this "unnavigable" stream in July 1977. It had apparently been about 10 years since anyone else had been along the stream by boat and the tunnels were a bit "spidery" to say the least
